Otakon '08
I must say these were the longest five days of my life. I'm still not over the exhaustion. I think I did a pretty good job at my front desk station though. I handled their questions politely, even when they made me want to get violent. I also think I'll still be able to recite the Art Show General Info sheet when I'm old and senile.

"Registration opens at 10:00 am...no exceptions"

"We close at midnight." "We close at 10:00."

"Live Auction is Sunday at noon."

"Yes you need a credit card."

"No, you're looking for the Alley. We're Art Show."

"The penalty for stealing our pens is castration with a plastic teaspoon." Ok, so I made that one up. Seeing as we went through two boxes of pens though I think that one should be on there.

Why can't people read???

It was nice in general. They bent down to fill out the registration forms before me and I felt somewhat regal.

On another note, we had some really terrific artwork this year (including quality adult pieces). I was so impressed. I'm almost thinking about submitting something to the show next year. Yes! I actually have an incredible idea. I need to work on that for the next show.

Here's looking forward to next year. Despite the stupidity of a few, I actually liked working that station again this year.

she'll be coming 'round the mountain
Otakon approaches soon. I'm nervous and excited all at the same time.

Today I got in some writing. Not much, but I'll take any progress over looking at the screen with a dumbfounded blank expression.

I finished Katie's soaps and labelled them. I just need to remember to bring them to the convention.

Hopefully my henna package arrives before Thursday. I want to look purdy for the fanboys.

Need to shop for supplies.

Dogsitting sometime tomorrow. I wish the puppy would get bigger soon.

Back to my previously scheduled programming...

10 Things You Wish You Could Say...
These are 10 things I wish I could say to different people. No names are provided. LJ friends and others.

1. I love you, but I wish you would stop making a mess of your life. There's so much potential for you, and so much you could accomplish if you would just apply yourself more. Yes, I know things have been bad in the past, but you need to stop worying about what you can't change and work on the things you can. And please start taking the advice of those wiser than you. The holes you've dug yourself in the past could have been avoided if you would have listened to those who love you and want what's best for you.

2. I've regarded you as a friend since before I can remember meeting you. You never fail to make me laugh. I wish your life could be a little better. You have a lot of creative potential and shouldn't be afraid to explore it. I hope your cynicism with the world doesn't interfere with your future happiness.

3. We've been friends for years but I've only just met you. You're so full of life, but I see in you the same problem I have about second-guessing ourselves. You're so very kind and generous to those around you. You'll make a terrific mother one day, I just know it. I'm honored to be among your friends.

4. You're quirky and have a bit of a dark side, but I love that about you. You're a very artistic person, and I hope big things come to you from that. I know your situation is a bit crazy, but I have faith that you'll pull through it all. There's a network of people who care for you very much. Things will be ok.

5. There's so much I feel like saying to you, but hold back for her sake. Nobody else can help you get over the issues you have, you have to do that on your own. You're a good friend, but you need to stop sabotaging yourself. She loves you, and you need to trust her or your insecurity will drive her and your other friends away. I love you and care about you. Please stop fretting over illusional wounds.

6. You're my best friend in the world, my soul mate in the truest sense of the phrase. I've seen you transform into something beautiful and wild, and I hope you're not afraid to embrace that. You're my sister spirit, and I care about you deeply. I can foresee you growing out of the shell you've constructed from your past and becoming a queen of your own destiny.

7. You're one of the most hilarious people I know. As someone older, let me give you some advice. The things you cling to as being so important now will not really matter much in the future. Friendship isn't about the number of people around you, but about which of those will stick with you through the tough times.

8. I miss you most of all, Scarecrow. We haven't talked in a long time, and the last time things had blown up all around. I miss the old days, when we had fun laughing and joking and things were more comfortable. Back before the drama kicked into gear. I hope maturity will teach you that you only need to be yourself. You have the potential for such brightness, don't abuse it.

9. You're maybe my strangest friend. We've talked for hours and days at a time, but there are times when I feel I don't know anything about you. You're always a surprise to me. I love you very much, and hope life takes you to wonderful places. I know you've had to deal with a lot from me, but still you're always there when I need you. I'm very grateful that we met.

10. I've only met you in person once, but you're one of my best friends. It's a shame we don't talk much anymore. I admire your free spirit, and your way of bringing me out of my defenses. I'm glad things are falling into place for you, but I never doubted that they would. I miss talking to you, and maybe someday we'll meet in person again. Good luck and take care.

late night yoinking...political style
Would you do meth if it was legalized?
No. I've got anough problems on my own without turning my body into a chemistry lab.

Abortion: for or against?
I'm for a woman's right to choose. That's not to say I think abortion should be taken lightly though.

Would our country fall with a woman president?
I don't think being a woman would matter as much as her stance on political issues. If George W. Bush were a woman I'd be no less angry.

Do you believe in the death penalty?
Generally I'd say no, then you get some psychopath who likes to rape children or eat babies. I think it depends on the case.

Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?
I don't really care, but I wish people for it would stop the whole "it doesn't damage the brain" line. It's psychologically addictive and the high that's felt is a chemical reaction in the brain. I don't care what other people do with their free time, but it isn't my cup of herbal tea.

Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?
No. We deserve to be treated like second class citizens by stupid seperate-but-equal laws. We deserve not to be able to see loved ones in the hospital or make medical decisions for our partner when they're unable to. We deserve not to be able to refuse to testify against our partners in a court of law. All this is friggen sarcasm by the way.

Do you think its wrong that so many Hispanics are moving to the US?
This is a loaded question. I'm bothered by illegal anyones moving in the country, but to target all Hispanics as being of questionable citizenship is disgusting. And I'm really friggen tired of the morons who lump Puerto Ricans into this. They're from a US territory and are citizens. I think most of the anti-illegal movement needs to stop being born of racist tendencies.

A 12 year old girl has a baby... should she keep it?
That's between her, the father, and their parents.

Should the alcohol age be lowered to 18?
Yes. If an 18 year old can vote and join the armed forces they should be old enough to drink.

Should the war in Iraq be called off?
It should never have been started. Iraq was an illusional enemy from the beginning.

Assisted suicide is illegal..do you agree?

Do you believe in spanking your children?

Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars?
Yes. The quasi-religious worship of symbols does not equal patriotism. I love my country, and a great part of that love is born from the freedom of expressing my displeasure with it.

A mother is declared innocent after murdering her 5 children in a temporary insanity case..what do you think?
I'd have to know more about the case to make a judgement on it.

Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers?
Nope. It's nothing I wouldn't say to someone's face.

sad day
My grandfather's funeral went ok. It's weird how nearly every funeral I've been to people say the same things: "he looks good" or "the service was nice" or complimenting the flowers. I even found myself muttering a "thanks for coming" or "good to see you" everytime I got a handshake or hug from both family and strangers. There were just no other words.

It was nice seeing the extended family again. It's just sad that the only time the remnents of the Gilmore clan get together seems to be over someone's death. My grandmother took it pretty well today. She placed an anniversary picture and a love letter in his casket. Yesterday at the viewing she nearly collapsed with grief. They were married for 53 years. I can't imagine that kind of loss.

My grandfather was interred at Evergreen Memorial Gardens right beside his brother, and my grandmother's plot is next to his. It was really nice there, peaceful. The cherry blossoms there added a very nice touch to the ceremony. He met my grandmother while he was stationed over in Japan when he served in the army. We couldn't find his discharge papers in time to give him a military funeral, so we opted for a red white and blue flower scheme instead.

Even through all that, it's still a little hard to believe he's gone. I spent most of my free time with my grandparents when I was a kid. He used to drive me around to school, take me shopping, take me out to eat. I miss him a lot.

My grandfather passed away tonight at 9:45. We're all going to my grandmother's house tomorrow morning to make funeral arrangements and call the extended family. It hasn't hit me yet, but I think it will soon. It just doesn't feel real at all.

So much to do...
I looked over the survey results I posted, and one question seems to keep going over and over in my head. "Do you have any special talents or skills?" and my answer was "a great too many." I wasn't being boastful. It feels like sometimes I'm into too many things at once, and so many of my projects go unfinished because of it. Here I am 40 pages into a rewrite and other things keep popping into my head. I bought a wine-making starter kit a week ago, and next month I intend to homebrew some mead. I've also been wanting to get back into the mehndi, with the weather getting warmer and all. My sister is getting me back into the soapmaking and I've been doing that for the past three or four days now. My mind is nowhere near as focused on this rewrite as it should be.

I'd like to be able to have a finished manuscript in my hands. I'd like to be able to feel that all the creative energy and effort I put into this stuff was worth it. I'd like to have the satisfaction of saying "I wrote a novel", even if it stays unpublished forever, even if nobody reads it. This story has been driving me crazy for the past seven years. The first time was a mess, the second time drew from too many other things that had been influencing me, and now this time is going so very slow. Of what I have written of it, I can honestly say that I'm happy with it. The mythology is there, the characters are there, the story is there. I just want a steadier pace than seven pages one day and nothing for a month. It's just not coming out as easily as it did before.

It's getting late. I should probably head off to bed. Maybe my dreams will give me the motivation and inspiration I need.

Goodnight internet people.

long time
I know, it's been forever since I last updated. So much has been going on and, yet, not so much at the same time. Summer flew by faster than I hoped. Otakon was a wonderful experience, and I hope to be a part of it again in the future. It's now the middle of October, and the weather is just starting to reflect the season. (Note to self: I need clothes and shoes) My writing has atrophied a bit, and maybe it's just part of my growing pessimism regarding it. It just seems so amateur when I reread it. I can't seem to find much inspiration anyway. The Raven rewrite is the most frustrating, because I know the plotline, but the details are eluding me. I started over from the beginning, adding more in the way of environmental detail, and purging the old influences that drove a stake into the heart of the original drafts. I just can't seem to get the characters to go where they need to go though. I'm still going to work on it, despite all this, but slowly, a page at a time.

The weight loss hit a snag over the summer, but I'm back on it with a fierce passion now. I need to get my dad to fix the exercise equipment in my room. We brought it up here from the basement during the great move back in February, and it's still in pieces. I hope to reach my goal by next summer. (Note to self: I need a small notebook to keep track of my daily calories)

I need to finish the last minute plans for the Hawaiian-themed birthday party in November. This is the first real party I've planned and financed, and I want it to go smoothly. I just need to get the snacks and liquor, and then all will be set. We have the costumes, leis, and decorations already.

Well, that's about all for now. I'll update again soon.

stuff going on....
Last weekend my grandfather went to the hospital, being treated for a fall (his third major fall since Thanksgiving). There wasn't any serious head trauma, and he was released...but. My dad said he was a bit incoherent, not seeing things right in front of him, or thinking someone was talking to him when the radio was on. Things over the past week have gotten worse. He thinks people call him on the phone when they don't, and he woke up from a nap and thought it was the day before. And now my mom said he's had a lengthy verbal conversation with his long-dead father. His doctors are thinking alzheimer's, but aren't certain. My dad's looking into places for him, because he can't be taken care of in his current living situation.

So yeah...stuff's been going on.

MADISON, Wis. - The Wiccan pentacle has been added to the list of emblems allowed in national cemeteries and on government-issued headstones of fallen soldiers, according to a settlement announced Monday.

A settlement between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Wiccans adds the five-pointed star to the list of "emblems of belief" allowed on VA grave markers.

Eleven families nationwide are waiting for grave markers with the pentacle, said Selena Fox, a Wiccan high priestess with Circle Sanctuary in Barneveld, Wis., a plaintiff in the lawsuit.

The settlement calls for the pentacle, whose five points represent earth, air, fire, water and spirit, to be placed on grave markers within 14 days for those who have pending requests with the VA...

You love music, poetry, dance, and (most of all) the open sea.

Your soul is filled with possibilities, and your heart overflows with compassion.
